ipod classic froze itunes - verifying... round ball spinning; Mac OSX; once I unplugged at this point and had to reformat (and reload) all songs. Workaround?

Mac OSX;, ipod classic froze itunes - message at top of screen says "verifying "my ipod" it's not even twirling around; just stopped. But the Mac rainbow ball is spinning; once I unplugged at this point and had to reformat (and reload) all songs. Workaround?

I cannot access either the ipod or itunes to change anything.

I don't think I had itunes set to auto-synch anything, almost positive.

Help appreciated! thanks

PS this happened yesterday afternoon and it's the same almost a day later.

Hi mabuse20000,

It sounds like your iPod classic and iTunes are both stuck and unresponsive. You may have some luck by forcing iTunes to quit:

Force an app to close on your Mac

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, or press Command-Option-Esc
(this is similar to pressing Control-Alt-Delete on a PC).

Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, then click Force Quit.

If that doesn't get the iPod to respond again, then you may need to reset the iPod. The only caveat to that is that you may indeed need to format and re sync your content to it.

Apple - Support - iPod - iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant

To reset your iPod:

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

There's not a whole lot else to do from that point. I would also recommend checking to see if you have your iTunes set to automatically sync with a device when connected in the device preferences.

After a long time on the phone with an Apple person, we realized that the only way I could get out of Itunes -- which had frozen and which had my Ipod in 'verifiying" mode and therefore I could not eject the ipod -- was to force close itunes, then eject the ipod, or if that failed, shut down the computer and reboot. But, every time I reattached it, the same thing happened. I was asked to try this on a different mac (since my ipod is formatted for mac); which I did; and after freezing THAT machine for a long time, finally I got the error message: cannot read or write to this ipod.

Therefore, I cannot even reformat it, as far as I can tell. Any ideas? At least it still works with what it has on it, but it has lots of room and I want to upload more.
