Recommendations needed for late 2006 iMac - Optimal Setup

In the last few months I have done a little updating of our old iMac to try to give it a bit of life and hopefully keep it going for quite a few more years. However, I am no expert and would really appreciate some experienced thoughts on what I can do with what I have to make it the best it can be. Right now its being used as the main source to sync all iPods, iPhones, iPads, for our family of 6. When its used, it isn't taxed. Internet searching, iPhoto, microsoft 2008 word, and iTunes are primarily used programs. I would ultimately like have it as the family "server", if I can even call it that. One location to store all of our photos, music, videos, etc. We also have an older macbook and a macbook pro I bought for the wife this past January.

Since this is only G wireless speed, I ordered a USB wifi adaptor to hopefully get free up the apple express it is ethernet cabled to currently to achieve N wireless speed. All the research I have done tells me I can't add anymore ram. Is this true? Since it has no bluetooth could I add it to the mac? I had read of CPU upgrades done, but don't know if its worth the hassle since the SSD I added was the best upgrade.

BTW I hope I have chosen the correct location for posting.. I appreciate all thoughts, just don't beat me up in the process!

It's considered malware around here. Do a Google search to find the developer's instructions for uninstalling it. Once you've done so you can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name and the developer's name in the file name. For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Also get rid of all Google software. They are know to be poorly written for Macs, are memory and CPU hogs and will slow down your Mac since you only have 2 GB of RAM.

BabyBoomer,

"just don't beat me up in the process!".. It seems that far too often I will experience myself or read a thread where people are rude, condescending or just outright jerks. I've seen this on most forums and its disappointing to see people act this way when they would never do so in person. I've seen it so bad on some sites that I no longer even attempt to be a part of any longer, it's not worth the headache. Hope that explains it and I do appreciate everyones advice for this question.

Ever since upgrading to a Samsung SSD, this old girl has come back to life and is quicker than my wife's 5 month old macbook pro. By all means I am a novice at all of the computer stuff but enjoy getting the best out of our Apple computers & devices.

Anything else I should do or programs to use or as described above avoid? I am still running the original iLife & iWork she came with in late 2006, However I have the family pack for iLife 11 and hope to install that this weekend too.

USB Expansion: I have been looking at a 60 Watt USB 6-10 port charger / expander for the iMac. I would like to be able to use a newer style apple keyboard and mouse preferably wireless. Id also like to see if one of the apple magic trackpads could be used as well with this old mac. I need a USB port expander to hook up iPhones, iPods, camera's backup drives, etc. What is the best way to go and what should I look out for when looking at these?
