Q: My iPad mini nor my MacBook Air can connect to Apple TV

I cannot get my iPad Mini nor my MacBook Air to connect to my apple TV.  When I try on the MacBook it spins a little and then says Could Not Connect to Apple TV. When I try on my iPad Mini I go to the Control Center > Airplay and click on the Apple TV and Mirroring.  When a second or two the checkmark bounces back to iPad.

I have tried it with Bluetooth on and off on both devices. They are all connected to the same WiFi network.  I look at my General>Network settings and it shows connected to the correct network, shows a valid IP, subnet mask, etc.  And Signal Strength has all bars full.

Applet TV Model # is MD199LL/A.  Software version is 5.3(6105)  I know this is not anywhere near the newest update available, but when I do Software Update on the Apple TV it spins for awhile and then says "The update was not successful.  The Apple TV update couldn't be downloaded at this time.  Try again later."  It seems that updating the software on my ATV hasn't been successful in awhile.  But I don't know what to do to correct the problem.

I did actually get connected about a week ago and was trying to mirror a TV show off of my laptop, but the video was very jerky so I gave up.  Now today I can't even get connected.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

This will be due to a network issue. The network test/signal on the device does not account for such issues

Try Ethernet. To see a current status of the network get a report from istumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks
