May 9, 2015 7:21 PM in response to The Digital Eye, LLCby Russ H,Yes; Cloud file storage services and video sharing services are two common ways to do what you want. To ensure the widest compatibility (Windows and Macs), you should probably choose an MP4 H.264 format to upload to a filed storage service. For a video services, there is a wide range of compatible formats – all specified by the service.
A 5 GB file is a very long movie if optimized for the Web. For example, 5-6 Mb per second is a reasonable bit rate for a 1080 H/264 movie. At that quality, your movie could be over 2 hours long and still be smaller than 5 GB.

May 9, 2015 9:22 PM in response to Russ Hby The Digital Eye, LLC,Thanks Russ, and please forgive the duplicate post, I just know sometimes posts are not answered, so I doubled it up under a different area. Can you explain how it works? Say I produce a video of my daughter at a diving meet, and I have a 2 GB movie, how do I share it?

May 10, 2015 9:51 AM in response to The Digital Eye, LLCby Russ H,You can share directly from FCP to a location on your computer and then upload to share remotely with your family. Share>Master File and choose Computer for format and H.264 for codec. That will give you an MP4 with good quality and reasonable size.

May 10, 2015 9:55 AM in response to The Digital Eye, LLCby Russ H,Sorry. I just caught the Final Cut Express in your profile. Is that what you're currently using? If so, my receding reply doesn't apply to FCE. You could, however use one of the MPEG-4 presets in Compressor to output to your computer – then upload.

May 10, 2015 3:52 PM in response to Russ Hby The Digital Eye, LLC,Sorry if i mis-spoke; I am using FC X.
Russ, I appreciate the help, and i am almost there:
Please split the conversation between if I save stuff to my cloud, and then try and share, or if I share from FC X. If I use FC X, am I sharing a link, as the video would be too big to send via email. If I try share directly from FC, anything over 10 MB is not recommended. please explain the process of sharing, as there are a lot of options.
Say hypothetically I wanted to send you a 2 GB movie, what would I do?

May 10, 2015 5:34 PM in response to The Digital Eye, LLCby Russ H,If you had a large (2 GB) movie file and you wanted to share I would proceed as I outlined in my 12:51 post and share directly from FCP X as a master file,MP4 with H.264 codec. Then I would upload to a file sharing service like Dropbox (iDrive, whatever) and let others download it. The reason for the MP4 us compatibility with windows. If your 2 GB movie were an Apple codec, they probably could;t play it after downloading.

May 10, 2015 7:11 PM in response to Russ Hby The Digital Eye, LLC,I know how to save and "share," and I read you post. The heart of where I was going was how to physically get it there. I was know about DropBox, which I got rid of last year as it presented too many problems for people I wanted to share to who did not already have dropbox. The signing up and all was not very workable for some who just wanted the movie.
I cannot do a similar share like dropbox via my iCloud storage, or iDrive? If I store the file in iCloud, I cannot share it with someone similar to the way dropbox works?
What about shared folders? Is that a workable solution?

May 11, 2015 6:51 AM in response to The Digital Eye, LLCby Russ H,Interesting; I don't generally hear of Dropbox *and competitors) regarded as a hassle to use. You send a link to your file to someone and they click on it and hit the download button.
Perhaps Vimeo would be your best solution. That way, your family members can view in without the bother of downloading. Or if they want a permanent copy they can download.
