Your iMac exports video through the Thunderbolt ports. What kind of inputs does the Dell display have?

So if I get a mini DisplayPort cable (i.e., identical at each end) will that run from my iMac to the Dell monitor at the appropriate rate to support the 4k at 60hz?
With OS X Yosemite v10.10.3, most single-stream 4K (3840x2160) displays are supported at 60Hz operation on the following Mac computers:

I know it can be done (i.e., that I can run the Dell monitor at 4K 60hz (which is what the linked page in your post would seem to suggest)) but I need to know what cable to buy so that it can done.
Mini display to Mini display because the display in is mini display. The thunderbolt ports will support mini display.

Hi there. I'm wondering if this actually ended up working for you? I have the same monitor but I am unable to get it to run at at 60Hz on the full resolution and I have a Mid 2015 MacBook Pro with a discreet graphics card (its supposed to be able to in theory). Would very much love to know if the mini DP to mini DP cable worked. The Dell P2715Q comes with a mini DP to full sized DP only and I'm not sure if this is this is the issue with my setup. Would love it if it was just a simple fix as getting a better cable.
Solved my own problem. I replaced the Dell cable that came with the monitor and that fixed it. I can now run the monitor at 4K 60Hz.
I have just bought a late 2015 27inch iMac and connected up a Dell P2715Q.
The Dell came with a Mini Display to Displayport. This works fine - but it is worth noting I initially connected MiniDisplay to MiniDisplay(Thunderbold). This set up DIDNT work.
So if you have a thunderbolt and a recent iMac or MBP then all the cables are included by Dell.
Question to other users: Whilst the Dell display works fine, when the iMac wakes from sleep about 70% of the time the Mac refuses to recognise the Dell display, and I have to go into display options and "detect displays". Any way of preventing this annoyance?
I have the same issue with my 5K iMac. I just bought a new P2715Q and also bought a new Apple Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable to make the connection. It does not work. I made sure I set the monitor to "mDP" input. If I use the Dell supplied mDP to DP cable, it works fine. So I doubt we both have bad cables or bad monitors, there is probably some incompatibility with this kind of connection for some reason. The DP works well enough for me, so I don't care at the moment, but I hate these kinds of problems when I pay extra for stuff that "just works" or is at least supposed to.
As for your sleep issue, I haven't seen it yet, but I hear it is an issue with revision A00 models of the P2715Q monitor. I have a rev A03 (manf date of 3/2016) and have not seen this issue yet (only been connected a few hours though, but has awoken every time). I have not seen a fix.
I tried "4K resolution ready" mini display port cables (both end) from Amazon where the Amazon blurb indicated that it was compatible with Macbook Pro... and could not get the monitor to detect/see my macbook pro. However, when I next tried a "4K ready" mini display port to display port cable, the P2715Q worked immediately.

b) I had been thinking that I might be able to daisy chain my two new P2715Q monitors using a single mini display port to mini display port cable from my macbook pro, and then us the display port out of that monitor into the display port in on the second monitor. But any use of the display port out on the monitor requires your use of MST (multi-stream transport) that involves a low frequency refresh- something most folks would rather not do. So if you want to use two of these dell monitors, you will have to use both of your macbook pro's thunderbolt outputs...

That's also how I got mine to work with the MBP (using a miniDP to DP cable). They problem however is that when the laptop sleeps and hence the monitor sleeps there are almost always issues on waking the the MBP. It freezes and you get incredible slow downs," spinning wheel of death" and strange colours on the screen. I have to end up hard reseting the MBP (incredible - I know!). My work around is that I never let the MBP sleep now when it is connected to power (you can of course still run screensaver to avoid screen burn) and using the external display. Basically it comes down to a sleep protocol issue - others have had similar issues with Dell monitors and this particular monitor (i have firmware revision 3). I love the monitor except this annoying problem with sleep wake. Anyone else here experience this problem? As far as I know most non-Dell 4K monitors do not have this sleep-wake issue
