Q: Concerned about music playing probably from ad, at start up

Hello,

The last few days when I first start my iMac computer, I hear what sounds like music from an advertisement play for maybe 10 seconds and then quit.  Today, it came back for a few seconds soon after it quit.  I've had this computer for a little over 3 years and this has never happened before.

My concern is that there is a file on my computer put there by adware or something, that should not be there.  How do I get to the cause of this?

Thanks

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

thomas_r, there is a grey line selecting Basso (the grey line just didn't register before, cause I'd be expecting a darker line)

Basso's not the issue, then. That's a stock sound that wouldn't cause what you're hearing.

Yes, I did put the computer into Safe Mode, and the sound clip did NOT play in safe mode.  Then I re-started it, and the sound clip played again.

That indicates that some third-party software is causing the problem. Safe mode disables third-party software that loads at startup, among other things.

    Baby Boomer,

There is no Home inside my Finder window, as your screen shot shows.  However, in the upper File menu under Go, there is a Home, but when I get into that file there is nothing that would lend itself to Login.

Are you sure you're not referring to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items  ?

There is no Home inside my Finder window

There should be.  Post a screen shot of your Finder window or just the column like I did.  DO NOT SHOW YOUR PERSONAL INFO.  Shade it out.

Are you sure you're not referring to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items  ?

Quite sure.  Besides, you already checked that area.

I don't know how to post a screen shot of the column.  I don't know how to shade stuff out on a screen shot either.   I do know how to take a basic screen shot though.

But the Home - House is not there, I just checked again.

How to take a screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support

In the reply window, click on the camera icon & follow the onscreen instructions.

Or you can drag the screenshot from your desktop right into the reply window.

Just the Finder window column will be sufficient.

You can shade out personal info using Preview>View>Show Markup Toolbar.

Go to the System Preferences app and click Users & Groups, then click Login Items. You should see two things in the list, one of which is WeatherEye. Remove that from the list, then restart your computer. Does that fix the problem?

Also, note that you should uninstall Trusteer Rapport, which is pretty useless on the Mac and is known to cause problems with Safari. That is not related to this problem, but is nonetheless something that should be done.

Do you think I should turn all the sound boxes off then?

Well, while I was gone, it's been pretty much established that what you are hearing is not caused by the default sounds. So, it is up to you if you want them on or off. I have everything disabled because I do not like sounds or notifications and do not need to worry about work related things, so I don't need them nor do I want those intrusions.

As for the Home folder: if you click on the Finder icon in the dock, a window opens, and you are sure that you are not getting an icon on the left which is the picture of a house (see the icon with the red circle around it):

No, there is no Home folder.  It might be cause I have an Admin account and a User account on this computer.  I do have the option of selection a Home folder to show there, with my name on it, but the same stuff is in that folder, that is in the Home folder under the Go menu in Finder.

Still cannot find the Login Items folder?  Makes me wonder what else is missing from your Home folder.

I had to go back and re-read to make sure I was understanding this question... I don't have a Login Items folder in that location on any of my systems. It's been a while since I used any older systems, but I can't recall ever seeing such a folder. Are you sure you're not talking about the /Library/StartupItems folder?

You must use the uninstaller provided by Trusteer.
