Q: bluetooth devices not recognized

I have a Macbook Pro (13 inch mid 2010), processor 2.4GHz, memory 4gb. I'm running 10.10.3 and my bluetooth doesn't seem to be working. It is not recognizing the bluetooth speaker that I have. It doesn't appear in the devices list, I just keep getting the "thinking" wheel. I tried restarting my computer and looking through the posts on this site, beyond that I have no idea.

The device is also not showing up on my iPhone5s. Neither are currently paired with any other devices, but my phone has paired with my car before, so I know it works.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I can't help with the speakers issue but note that an iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it.  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722

If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204678

Im not trying to pair my phone to my computer. The device that won't pair to my phone or my computer is the speaker. I turned it on, put it right next to my macbook and my iPhone and neither the MacBook nor the iPhone recognized the speaker. It did not show up on the Bluetooth devices list on either of my apple products. They were both on and on proximity  and It did not work.
