New WDMyCloud & AirPort Extreme password

I can't see my WD MyCloud on my network even though it's plugged into the Airport Extreme usb port.

I've plugged a new WD MyCloud drive into my AirPort Extreme USB port. When I turn my PC (i.e. not a Mac) on I get a pop up window saying AirPort Disc "WDMyCloud" has become available What do you want to do? Ignore/enter ID & password.

As I didn't yet have a password set up on the MyCloud drive, I put in the AirPort Extreme's password (it had already put my name is as the ID so I just left that as is). It didn't unlock the drive.

I went into AirPort Utility to check I was using the right password to assess the AirPort device & I was.

I then tried 'Ignore' but wasn't able to get the drive visible on my list of drives.

I checked that the AirPort was on the latest software & it seems to be fine.

  • I tried reading about AirPort passwords/discs but they say 'select edit' & I've not got anything called 'edit' when I open AirPort Utility so am stumped early on.
  • I tried selecting the Extreme on AirPort utility & then went for 'Manual Set-up' where I got an option to look at Discs. A tab says "This pane shows your AirPort Discs but nothing is shown there.

Any ideas?

A WD MyCloud is a network device.. you cannot plug it into the USB port of the Airport.

You must plug it into the ethernet port on the extreme.. Either you have the name of the WD device wrong or you have a typo with USB and mean ethernet.

WD make so many different boxes with similar names.. it becomes extremely confusing.. so can you please double check it.

No problem.. you must setup the MyCloud.. and you are trying to do that via the airport utility which is wrong.

The MyCloud as everything built for networks in the entire world (except Apple) runs on http setup pages.

What you need to do is to open your browser and type in the IP address of the MyCloud.

If it is setup to work via dhcp which I would hope it will be, there is probably a discovery program on the CD that accompanies the mycloud.

I do not have one.. so I will need to point you to the manual.

There are documents there for setup from PC or Mac.

There is an official youtube video here.
