Why can't I drag podcasts to my tablet?

I'm using iTunes 11.4 on a very old Mac running OS X 10.6.8.

Suddenly, out of the blue, I can no longer drag my podcasts from iTunes to the tablet. I tried with both my iPad Mini and my iPad Air. Both still running iOS 7 because I am concerned about compatibility problems with iOS 8, and because I don't need any of the new features of iOS 8.

First, with the Mini, I was able to create a new playlist, but could not drag anything into it. Then, with the Air, I was not even able to create a new playlist.

Can anyone suggest how I might begin to figure out the problem? I tried quitting and re-launching iTunes.
