what does the love heart symbol in the top left hand corner of my photos mean?

It symbolizes "Add to Favorites." If you click on the heart symbol, you will create a Favorites Album which contains any pictures which you have designated with the heart symbol.

Albums can be displayed using the sidebar. To display the sidebar in Photos, choose View > Show Sidebar, or press Command-Option-S
