I want to stop receiving group messages on my iphone 6. If I turn it off on my phone will they still come though? And if not, will the sender receive a message stating I cannot receive group messages?

I'm afraid that setting is only for sending them. Yes, you'll still get them. You'll just have to tell your "friends" to leave you out of them (I know, they're annoying as *&^%$#.)
Assuming you use iOS 8.x, when you do get a group message, you can opt out of either getting a notication of new posts, or drop out of it completely:
Messages > the group message > Details (top right) > Do not disturb > ON, or Leave this conversation
If I turn off group messaging will I still receive them?
