I am trying (unsuccessfully so far) to change the email address for this account. I made this account several years ago when AppleID was not so much in use. I have now an AppleID with a current email address, but I see no reason why I cannot continue using this account (other than of course the email problem). Is there no way to change a forum email address unless it is an AppleID? If so, that's not very nice.

You should, unless it's an Apple domain email address, be able to change the primary email address via 'manage your apple id' button on http://appleid.apple.com
