Q: Upon Photos taking over iPhoto, it appears that all my "Events" (the most important part of y portfolio) have disappeared and been replaced by not only all my photos apparently jumbled, and mixed with other images. How can I recover the "Events"?

To give more info:  although I have various albums, I spent ages putting all my photos into "Events". One advantage is that there are no duplicates in "Events" another is that the pics are where I want them for viewing or sharing or putting on CDs for safety (except I had not got around to putting them on CDs).

Now everything has gone from iPhoto (and iPhoto Library Manager) and I appear to e left with a jumble of images apparently taken from odd documents on my Mac Mini, mixed with a jumble of all (I assume) of the photos from my albums, including many many duplicates.

If I got my "Events" back I could always go to another photo enhancing system, as I have read that the "Photos" system is simplistic. I found that using all the facilities of the iPhoto enhancements there was rarely any need to use Photoshop Elements -  and it was quick and easy to use.

I'm using OS X Yosemite

Thanks for any advice.

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Here are some support pages to get started with PHOTOS  -- it's not that its simplistic - simply that some of the goodies are only available to those who are curious - sort of like a video game.

iPhoto works very well with MacOS X 10.10.3.  There is no need to jump onto the Photos bandwagon right now.

The update to MacOS X 10.10.3 did not uninstall iPhoto. You will still find it in the Applications folder. Just drag it back to the Dock and ignore Photos.  If you did not update iPhoto to the latest release before the update, see this User Tip:

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

If you click the iPhoto icon in your Applications folder to launch it, you may see a warning that your iphoto Library has been migrated to Photos. Just click the the button "Open iPhoto" and you old iphoto Library should open again.

One advantage is that there are no duplicates in "Events"

There are no events in Photos. The basic organisational unit in your Photo Library are now Moments.  They are created automatically based on the capture time and the locations of your photos and are grouping photos taken at the same time ad the same place.

When you migrate an iPhoto library to Photos, Photos will try to mimic the events by albums. For each event it will create an album with the photos from this event. You'll find these albums in a folder iPhoto Event.  But these albums will not behave like events. You cannot move photos between albums by dragging and dropping. Dragging a photo will just add it to the destination album and not remove it from the source album.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.
