Q: why when my i pad is linked to my pc i can see the songs on there but when not linked they are gone same with my videos

When my pi pad is linked to the pc I can see my I pad contents and it says I have 177 songs on and 8 videos but when I try to view them they are not there I have syn the I pad to the pc and it still will not show the items I am losing all faith in apple products
