Q: Contacts won't pull from Faces in photos

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 5.05.06 PM.pngI've spent quite a bit of time investing in the "Faces" feature in Photos.  However, one issue is that I can't use those faces for contacts via the Faces selection as seen in the picture.  Any ideas how to fix this?

In order for Faces to populate, make sure that person has faces listed in Photos. The name in Faces album must match the name in the Contact list. If no faces are available with that spelling for the contact, then none will appear in the list.

Note: When you add names to Faces in Photos, if there is a contact created in Address Book for the name you are spelling, it will show as a choice. Choose the contact name for the face so it will be associated.

Sometimes it get hung on the search and I will click on Camera and back to Faces. Then it populates.

I am having the same issue since upgrading to Photos.  Within Contacts, when you edit the picture, the message lists iPhoto and Aperture, but not Photos.  I've reviewed the Contact Preferences, but did not see an option to use Photo's instead of iPhoto.

I've also checked the spelling of the names of faces in Photos compared to contacts, and that does not seem to matter. And clicking through the source options within Contact does not seem to help. Even the option to view pictures from "My Photo Stream" does not show images.

    Thanks in advance for help

I get the same pop up when selecting a contact with no faces associated with it. It does not show the Photos app. I don't really know if the Photos app was integrated this menu yet, but my iPhoto library is on an external drive and I can eject it and still view faces in the Address Book for contacts. I can also view the PhotoStream.

It does take time for these images to load. Like I said, sometimes clicking on another choice and back to Faces will sometimes bring in photos that don't appear at first. There may be some bugs involved.

Yes, the spelling does matter. Select the Faces Album in Photos, and select a person to test that you have a contact card for. Select the name below the face and start retyping the selection. The icon for the contact should appear in the list, and you should be able to select the contact as the face name. Then you know it will be correct.

Just for the record. I checked some contacts this morning that didn't have a photo in the contact. One example: A particular contact in the Address Book is listed with first and last name, but only had the first name listed in Faces in the Photos app. No images for faces will appear.

I went to the Faces album and changed the name to the full name matching the contact. Then, in the Address Book, that contact would then populate with the faces to select.

So, if it isn't working correctly for you, try repairing the library by holding the Command-Option key down and start Photos. Then select to repair the library. Be sure you have a backup of your library before doing this in case something goes wrong.

Yeah, you're right. I just switched between tabs and waited for a minute then they populated.

Yes. I have an SSD drive and it takes a few seconds for it to load initially. I would imaging a regular drive will take a bit longer.

You know what? I tried all the suggestions above and NOTHING worked. Mac made it's name for ease of use and intuitive actions and photos is exactly the opposite. I was so excited when they ditched iphoto and went to photos because iphoto was a slow, bloated, underperforming piece of crap that I was constantly fighting with. Apple did even worse with their upgrade. What did I do to solve my issue? I said, "to **** with my machine, i'll add a contact picture to my contact on my iphone 6. Took me 5 seconds. Why? Is IOS so much more advanced than Yosemite? Please...You can do better Tim.

I am having this same problem!  I have a MacBook Pro and I am running Yosemite 10.10.4, with new Photos 1.0.1.  I spent a great deal of time going through hundreds of pictures in Photos using the Faces feature.  Then, when I go to Address Book and try to Edit a photo from my Contacts, it indicates "Loading" for a while, then I receive the message, "Find and organize photos of people in iPhoto or Aperture using Faces" (obviously, Address Book is outdated, because I no longer have iPhoto).  I have clicked away from Faces many times, to Defaults, Recents and/or Camera.  But, when I come back to Faces, I get the same message.  I have closed out of Photos.  I have closed out of Address Book, then opened it again.  It is still not working.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

Is your Photos Library enabled as the System Photos Library?

The option "Use as System Photos Library" in the Photos > Preferences > General need to be grayed out.

Quit Photos, quit Contacts, and log off and on to force both applications to write and update their preferences file. Sometimes it may even be necessary to restart the mac to force the preferences files to be written.

    Then try again.

Ok, after some hours spent on this issue, this is another little step! Unfortunately It's not a solution, it's a report of a strange behavior in order to find a solution.  This is what I found : I made a card in Contacts, First Name=Mario, Last Name=****. I have some faces of Mario in Photo, so I tag these faces with the suggested "Name LastName" generated from Contacts. I come back in Contacts and I try to define a face by  editing the picture in the circle Edit > Tab Faces -> no images (I see the boring message that says to "Find and organize photos..."). NOW, please, pay attention to this incredible behavior : Enter in edit mode in the card and switch First name with the Last name i.e. I edit as follow: First name= ****, Last name=Mario. Save the card. Now repeat the procedure to define a profile picture by calling "Faces" .... You will be able to see all the 'faces' pictures you have in Photos!!!!!!!!     It's incredible...crazy!   I don't want to think that this bug is a stupid 'switch' between name and last name!!  Please, tell me if you have the same behavior by switching first and last name.  I think there is something that is related with the option "Card" -> "show first name before last" or viceversa in Contacts ... because the tag of Faces is identical to this 'option' when you give a name to the face... anyway I'm confused...

After i tried the above action, it can choose now, but all in "full size" photo, how can it display in "face" size again ?

    This help,

If "Use as System Photos Library" doesn't grey out, just click it.
