I am unable to receive a network signal from my Ethernet. I chose to travel with my mac pro. It had always been plugged in and in working order. Now, that I am back, it does not work.
How can I check the hardware?
System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > (assist me) > (diagnostics)...
what does it say about what is and is not working?

Under "Status:"
No ethernet?
Try using the [+] button below that pane, and see if any Ethernet is offered.
One other place to look is:
menu > About this Mac > More Info > ( System Report) > Ethernet Cards...
...to see if it is listed there.
If not, it has disappeared from your Mac, and may need an SMC Reset to cause it to re-appear.
Also try resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
