Q: my macbook pro retina 13 gets really warm

I own a mid 2014 13 inch retina macbook pro the 128 ssd version and while using it i noticed that sometimes it got warm while watching videos on YouTube or streaming movies, but today while watching videos with an office update downloading in the background it got really hot, enough to hear the fan and I have never heard it work. So I was wondering what are the temperature levels when using it for those things o working because I don't want it to get too hot when I start doing serious work on it because  I get worried so easily and I have been having really bad luck with electronics lately.

 

PS. Also safari has been really buggy and glitchy with YouTube having issues with video playback and full screen is that normal too? Because safari handled that fine.

    Hi catc296,

     

    First of all, check out this Apple Article on the temperature of your MacBook - Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support - this should answer some of your temperature questions.

     

    How are you using your MacBook? It is recommended that you use your MacBook on a hard flat surface (especially if you're running CPU intensive processes), thus preventing overheating by allowing enough air space underneath the Mac. A lot of people use on their laps, beds and blankets etc. which is of course fine for short periods of time, however when you feel the machine starts to heat you should take the steps to ensure it wont overheat. Other things such as cases and charging will also affect heat.

     

    The following Apple support website will shed a little more light on your MacBook and how to care for it, and even includes a section on battery heat. https://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/

     

    If you feel their is genuinely a problem with the machine, call Apple immediately. They should be able to take a look at your machine and diagnose your problem, if any.

    Hey thanks! well i actually use it on a desk or a mobile stand with wheels never on the bed because I never want the computer to take risks of overheating, the links you gave helped a lot i will take them as a reference, but I was just wondering if someone else had this issue and if it were normal on other MBPR before i took it to Apple.

    By the way it cools down really fast, yesterday it took less than 2 minutes to get cold again. that's amazing fast.

     

    PS: on the other subject I tried firefox and it has no bugs or glitches on youtube I guess safari is the problem.

    Hi,

     

    I have a late 2013 MBP 15", 2.6 GHz i7, 16 GB, with a 512 SSD.

     

    Started noticing in the last say 6 months is started getting really hot too.  For the first 2 years I never head the fan once, even when I lived in an unconditioned apartment in Spain that was always really hot.

     

    The first time the fan came on it scared me cause I didn't even know it had one, but it was very faint.

    Now as I'm sitting here it is very audible and once in a while will really kick into high gear that is actually loud.

     

    At first I only noticed it if I was watching a movie streaming on a large external monitor, now it seems to happen randomly, not necessarily for any more intense tasks.  Although I did hear that some friends are noticing Chrome has been a real battery hog lately but I'm always plugged in so it doesn't matter for me.

     

    Mine only seems to get hot at the little strip between the keyboard and the screen.

     

    Hasn't impacted performance yet.
