Intermittent shutdown and restart

For no good reason my MAC has recently started to shutdown intermittently and restart spontaneously. It is running with OSX 10.9.5 and has been doing so happily for sometime. Upon restart, it provides a report of the error encountered, but it reads like nonsense to me. I have managed to capture the message that appears on screen. it is attached/included herewith. Can someone interpret this message and let me know how to address the the problem involved. Thank you in anticipation. Fred C.B. (PS) If I have posted this twice I am sorry, Being a rank amateur on this site, I got a little confused with the process, one minute the message being written was here, then it disappeared only to return again after I resubmitted a rewrite? So, to be on the safe side, I have submitted this, seeing it has reappeared, just in case the other attempt went haywire.

Please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can then look for obvious issues. Do you use an anti-virus or cleaning apps?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Thank you Linc, You wlll have to bear with me. Caught in other matters at the moment, so having to suffer the problem for then time being. But will work through your suggestion as soon as I have more time on my hand. Actually someone has pointed out that I posted to the wrong Forum; Pro Mac, instead of iMac. They said they were going to shift the post, if I verified that my Mac was in fact an iMac, which it is. Sent the response, but heard no further, so not sure what that means in terms of my standing issue? In all of 3 years using a Mac ,I have never had a problem before that warranted a visit to a Forum to seek a problem solution. So my time here is an entirely new experience.

Hello, Thank you for your advices. Sorry for long delay in responding. Don't get much time to wrestle with PC problems due to other pressing demands. However, have at last managed to run the EtreCheck. Details below. You ask if I run any AntiVirus or Cleanup App? No Antivirus, but a few weeks ago I did download and try the CleanMyMac App, run it once and not touched it again, after it indicated I needed to pay up to get the full benefits from the App. Strangely enough, it may be coincidence, but the problem with my Mac at present, seems to have come about after this episode with CleanMyMac?

The EtreCheck Report:

Problem description:

My iMac is spontaneously shutting down and restarting for no apparent reason. When it restarts, it provides a message window that comments on the Shutdown problem and presumably spells out a reason for the happening, but it all reads like ‘dutch’ to me. I can provided a full copy of this report if need be.

Thank you for giving time to my inquiry.

May 26, 2015 1:37 AM in response to Linc Davis

Hi Linc, At last I am able to spare a moment to pursue this matter. I believe I have extracted the log report in question. Refer below. There is a possibility I have stuffed up on the protocol, as I note that you have said not to post any other Diagnostic Reports, but I only noted this after sending an EtreCheck report in response to another respondent. Not being familiar with the usual expectation on this Forum, I felt obliged to respond to those who bothered to act on my inquiry. Perhaps I should have only selected one and not try to field the lot? Sorry if I have complicated this matter by my ignorance.

You computer has 2 issues that I see, first it has com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent.plist installed, this is considered malware by many experienced users on these forums. OS X does not need any antivirus, cleaning, or third party maintenance utilities to run well. Follow the developers instructions for uninstalling CleanMyMac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The next item is your computer is suffering from Kernel Panics, thank you for posting your last KP report. The computer is crashing when it "sees" LittleSnitch. Also uninstall that app, it is the cause of many KP's particularly if it is out-of-date.

Uninstall both apps, re-test and then post a new EtreCheck report for us to see if we notice any other issues.

Many thanks for your very prompt response. Have acted in terms of your advices and after the latest spontaneous shutdown and restart, subsequent to removing the Apps in question, have rerun the EtreCheck App. Resultant report is below. I notice that under the 'User Launch Agents' section that it shows:

[failed]com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

Wonder why it is still making reference to 'com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist' when this App has been fully removed to my understanding?

Thank you for your help with this matter it is much appreciated.

Problem description:

Trying to corner reason for intermittent/spontaneous shutdown and restart of my iMac. Have uninstalled CleanMyMac 3.5.2 in terms of Providers instructions and done likewise wise with LittleSnitch (Latest Version) taking the full uninstall option from the two choices given. Since doing this and restarting the PC, the problem is still occurring?

A few things I noticed:

1. CleanMyMac may not be fully uninstalled, though I'm not sure if this is the source of your panics.

2. 4GB RAM is fine for many users, but you might want to install additional RAM, since you have two additional slots available.

3. Your surge reducer from CPS has been listed on two of the reports here. Linc has mentioned the possible issue with this USB device.

May 28, 2015 3:24 AM in response to Linc Davis

Thank you Linc, Working through your suggestions, one at a time. There are only three, one to the UPS that drives a PowerPanel App, 7 Port USB HUB on another, and the Printer. Have disconnected the connection to the UPS. Shall see how things fair over the next day or so, although I will be away for a time. Will keep you posted of outcome after I have removed all, if need be. Maybe the UPS connection is the culprit? Cheers.

May 28, 2015 3:36 AM in response to poikkeus1

Thank you for your comments. Installing additional RAM sounds like a good idea to me but, unfortunately, not something very easy to achieve in my case. I live in a very small country town and it is some 130 kms to the City, and I don't fancy lugging my Desktop that far and probably having to leave it to get it installed. If I just purchased the RAM I would not have a clue how to fit it myself. This iMac is a far cry from my former WINDOWS based PC that I could quickly add extra RAM to without needing a science degree. Cheers.

Jun 1, 2015 4:03 AM in response to Linc Davis

Linc, I cannot thank you enough. Seems that you have solved the problem completely. Since removing the USB connection to the UPS I have not experienced any further shutdowns and restart happenings. In fact, I inadvertently left the Mac on overnight and in all of 12 hours, there was not one restart,

Normally when I have been using the PC; say for two hours, there would have been at least three shutdowns and restarts in such period. It was beginning to drive me mad. I am exceedingly grateful for your assistance.

Intermittent shutdown and restart
