Have a read of this article and see if it helps.

Even if you're only using a single device, it will help to set up your account so the mail stays on the server (backup).

i know the retention message rule of every mail client program.
it depends on storage space available for the mailbox on mail server.
If the storage space is limited, it is possible that into local inbox folder of iphone there are many emails not present into server mailbox.
So this emails, even for outbox mails, aren't part of itunes o icloud backups.

May 12, 2015 5:01 AM in response to Michele1976by RIFerrarr,I use my phone to access my emails not store them. I store them on my computer, where they get backed up as needed. If you leave them on the server then yes, when the server needs space you will lose emails. But if you were to store them on your computer then you would not lose them.

I agree that the main archive of e-mail should not be the iphone.
I agree also that POP3 protocol isn't adeguate for mobile device, especially if there are more devices to be synchronized.
I point to the fact that the backup of the iPhone, both local and cloud, do not consider at all the existence of accounts that are configured through the POP3 protocol.
When I run a backup I think I do a backup of all my sensitive data, but in reality this does not happen and I can lose important data if i have to restore this backup in a new one iphone or ipad.
The only complete and efficient solution is to use a mail account configured with IMAP protocol or EXCHANGE server. This can preserve all mail folder (send, receive, subfolders, calendar, notes).
Are You agree with that?
Thanks
