Help with Diagnosis

I have a late 2009 iMac (10,1), currently working off my clone backup. When booted into the main drive, all I'm getting now is the spinning wheel. When I boot up, the Desktop never fully loads. Example: Most of the files on my Desktop don't completely reach the Preview stage. If I try clicking on a file, the spinning wheel appears and never stops. Trying to force quit with Option+Command+esc won't even work. So at this point booting into my main drive results in an unable Desktop.

The only diagnostics I've done so far is booting into the Recovery Drive to Verify the Disk and Repair permissions. According to Disk Utility, the Mac HD is OK.

I'm not getting any clicking or obvious hard drive failure sounds and the clone on an external drive seems to work fine with one caveat. My desktop seemed to freeze with the exception of the mouse pointer. I could move the pointer, but could not click to open anything. Animation on the Dock didn't work either. Rebooting back into the clone again resolved the issue. Freezing on my main drive was an issue before the persistent spinning wheel began to happen.

Seems like it's either the HD or logic board to me, but that's why I'm here looking for some help before I go out and buy a new machine.

Run Apple's Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. If you get errors that confirms a hardware issue which means taking it in for repair. The reason to run AHT 2-3 times is it does not always find errors after the first or second pass, however when it does the errors are correct. If you cannot locate AHT then take the machine into your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional diagnosis.

Three extended tests. 9 hours 39 mins 28 secs, no problems found. I have 12 GB of ram, maybe that's why it took so long.

I restarted into my clone and the system appears to run fine. I'm wondering if it would be worth restoring the Mac HD with the clone.

Before going that route, please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for other issues.

I restarted in The Recovery drive, Verified the Disk and found an error. Repair Disk 3x and Mac HD was Ok.

I was excited to restart into the Mac HD only to find the System still pretty unresponsive. Spinning wheel and long delays for anything to happen.

I'm not sure I want to put a new HD in this machine. I've already had the HD replaced via the HD Replacement Program for this machine. I suppose I could buy a new iMac, but I'm wondering if I could keep this iMac going a little longer by running my main System off an SSD.. I understand an external SSD is not as fast as an internal, but it must be faster than than the internal HHD. Any opinions.. Good idea, bad idea??
