Q: Messages and Spam Yahoo Messenger Authorizations

Hi-

I use Apple Messages to collect up my Yahoo, AOL and Apple Messenger accounts under one client. As Mac users know, Yahoo no longer supports Messenger for the Mac and certain issues can cause problems for us Mac people.

One issue in particular is the number of Spam "Yahoo Authorizations" I receive in Apple Messages to my Yahoo Messenger account. Despite months of declining the requests in both Apple Messages and the web based Yahoo Messenger, the very same friend requests kept coming in. I was about to tell my Yahoo Messenger friends that I was signing off permanently when I came across a solution. Unfortunately it involves the use of a Windows PC but it did work.

1. Install the latest Yahoo Messenger on a Windows computer

2. Sign in to your Yahoo account on the Windows computer

3. Decline all of the Spam Yahoo Authorizations on the Windows computer

4. Quit out of the Yahoo Messenger on the Windows computer

5. Reopen Messages on your Mac and sign in to your Yahoo Account on the Mac.

6. Enjoy the lack of Spam pop ups!

From what I understand, this has something to do with Yahoo still supporting the Windows version and processing the declined authorizations.

Worked for me and I hope it works for you!

What worked for me was to log in to my Yahoo account via the web messenger at https://messenger.yahoo.com and click on my name (initials) in the top-left corner of the page, then select "Privacy Settings" and uncheck the checkbox saying "Let friends find me".  Once I did that, I no longer received spam friend authorization requests on iMessage on OSX.

The caption of that privacy setting option read: "Friends can find you on Messenger when they search for your phone number or email."

This makes sense as probably spam bots monitor your status via your email or phone number.
