how much does it usually cost to get a diagnostics test done ? no longer under apple care

I believe they charge around $75 which is creditable against any repair costs that you have performed.

I purchased a second hand MBP about 3 weeks ago and made an Apple store genius bar appointment to have the MBP tested. The cost was zero. Make an appointment.

Also no faults were were found.

You can run a Apple Hardware Test yourself AHT http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 See the Apple Diagnostic Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support

If need be take it in, the diagnostic would be more conclusive by the genius bar.
