Does Photos not launch, when your iPhone is connected, or does the iPhone not appear in the sidebar, when you connect the iPhone to USB and then launch Photos manually?
After upgrading to MacOS X 10.10.3 you need to confirm again, that you trust your Mac.

I'm having this same problem except my iphone is not showing up on the sidebar. It was opening all the time and then I changed a setting that said something about not opening Photos app up every time my phone was connected. Since then it hasn't detected or opened up the app. I looked under the preferences for Photos app and didn't see anything there.
Connect your iPhone again and then launch Image Capture. Does your iPhone show in Image Capture? If yes, select it and then open the actions menu in the lower left corner of the window to select which application to open, when the device is connected.
That worked. Thank you for the tips. One quick question, when I right click a photo I the "show referenced photo" option doesn't show up in the menu and when I click on FILE the option is greyed out. How do I find the originals for both photos and videos?

Photos for Mac does not reveal original image files in the Finder, if they have been imported to the Photos library. You can only reveal the original files, if you import them as referenced images and manage them yourself in folders outside the library. But I cannot recommend to do that in Photos. It is not well supported. It will be difficult to delete photos and you cannot use the photos in iCloud Photo Library. See this Help page:

The Show Reference Photos option is only active if you're running a "referenced" library or the photo was a referenced photo in from you iPhoto library.
To get a copy of the original image file you can do one of two things:
1 - Option-drag the thumbnail from the Photos window to the Desktop. Sometimes you may have to click and hold on the thumbnail for a short period of time before starting the drag.
2 - use the File ➙ Export ➙ Export Unmodified Original... menu option.
