Question regarding Purchasing/Downloading Final Cut Pro X

Hey guys,

I've posted this question both in Final Cut Pro forums and Mac App Store forums

I'm interested in purchasing 'Final Cut Pro X' (and later maybe 'Motion' and 'Compressor') from the Mac App Store.

The thing is, I'm running OS X Mavericks 10.9.5, and the versions that are currently available on the Mac App Store are only supported by OS X Yosemite.

Whenever I click the 'Buy APP' button, I'm receiving an error message stating that purchase could not be made, because this version can not be installed on my OS.

I have a friend's mac, which running Yosemite, which I can use to make the purchase, to associate it with my Apple ID.

I obviously won't be able to run the latest version on my mac,

But I also have Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie and Xcode associated with my Apple ID, and when trying to download any of them, I'm receiving a message stating that the latest version is not supported by my OS,

And then I'm asked if I'm interested in downloading the latest version compatible with my OS,

So having any of them associated with my Apple ID, still allow me to download the early versions.

I was wondering if this is the same case for Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor.

If I'll purchase that latest version from the Mac App Store (currently 10.2), would I be able to download Final Cut Pro X 10.1.x to my Mac?

It seems reasonable that it would be the same,

But I wanted to see if maybe any of you guys know, before I spend 300$ just because it seems reasonable it will work.

Thanks guys.

The only downloadable version from App Store is FCPX 10.2

Just to add…if you had installed an older version of FCP – 10.0.6, for example – and you wanted to update while also keeping )S X 10.9, there would be an upgrade path to 10.1.4 But that is as far as you could go. And for that to happen, the App Store server has to see the old version on your Mac.

So what Innocents said…it's not going to happen without 10.10.2 or higher. If you're not willing to upgrade the OS, consider making a partition on your start-up drive – or using another drive – install 10.10 to create a bootable volume and install FCP X on it.

Appreciate your reply guys.

A little follow-up question,

I was starting to look for purchasing Final Cut Pro X redemption codes.

So if I would find Final Cut Pro X 10.1 redemption code, which will associate this version to my Apple ID, and not the latest one,

Would I be given the most recent compatible version of Final Cut Pro X by the Mac App Store, just as Russ H suggested, and as with Keynote, Pages, etc. ?

OK.

Thank you for your help guys.

So it seems I currently don't have any LEGAL way of getting version 10.1.x.

I have to admit, it seems a little strange.

What if someone have a Mac that can't run any newer version of OS than Mavericks,

Does Apple not providing any solution for that?

Or a guy in my situation, which doesn't wan't to upgrade to the latest OS version, which seems pretty reasonable, considering Apple is releasing a new OS about every 6-8 months...

Adobe, for instance, provides on their website download links to every CS package since version 3 (the latest version is CC, which is the the 8th CS package),

And I know it is still possible to purchase license to the previous version (CS6).

Not to mention that every sub-update (for example from CS6 version 1.1 to 1.2) does not require any OS update.

I think it's kinda absurd that I can either-

1)

-Create a new partition

-Download about 4-5 GB of new OS

-Install that OS

-Have 'unnecessary' used disk space, since I'm only installing new OS so I could install Final Cut Pro X 10.2

-Every time I would like to use Final Cut Pro X I will have to stop what I'm doing, and boot to the newer OS (since I don't want to use Yosemite)

Go thru all of the above harassment, just so I could pay 300$ to a company that already worth more money than any other company.

Or 2)

Do as little as write in Google 'Final Cut Pro X 10.1 download' and get countless of download links of Final Cut Pro X 10.1.x

Sometimes I think it's funny the lengths and harassment that one has to go just so he can pay for something he can much easily get for free (although illegally).

Especially in a company like Apple that pride to be such intuitive and user-friendly.

Anyway, this is me just releasing some steam.

Thanks again for your help guys.

A Mac that can run Mavericks can run Yosemite, they both have the same hardware spec.

Therefore if you want to test out the latest Mac OS and test the latest FCP X for one month both for free, create a partition install the new OS, install the latest FCP X then decide if you want to buy FCP X, if you don't; delete the partition.

Hey guys,

Just a little update to those who are in a similar situation as I've been.

I've decided to use a mac running Yosemite, just so I'll be able to purchase a copy of Final Cut Pro X, and then download an 'illegal' earlier version of Final Cut Pro X, so I will be able to run it on Mavericks.

As opposed to the comments above, after purchasing the latest version, on OS X Yosemite,

when trying to download Final Cut Pro X on Mavericks I've been notified that the latest version does not support my OS, but then I've been offered to download an earlier, compatible version,
Just as with Xcode, iMovie, iLife, etc'

Same goes for 'Motion' and 'Compressor'.

It is a little weird that you can't purchase it on Mavericks because the latest version only supports Yosemite, but after purchasing the latest version on Yosemite, you are able to download a compatible version on Mavericks.

However, this is what I wanted to achieve,

So now I have a 'legal' version running on my OS.

Appreciate your effort to help anyway guys.

Cheers
