adobe illustrator file open

I am suddenly having a problem with Illustrator. File Open no longer goes to last folder, it opens to the top of the menu, every time. It was working, now its not. Rebuilding the preferences did not help. What happened here? All other Adobe programs and functions doing OK. I am using illustrator CS5 on Mac OSX 10.10.3 and yes this coincided with the last OS X update a week ago May 3rd.

and it defaults to "desktop"? or some other location?

is there a switch for the dialog box to use "adobe" or "os"?

addendum edit:

I just spoke to four graphic artists I support who use CS5, CS6 etc all on Mavericks; They all stated there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how it behaves with remembering or forgetting folders which is probably what the consensus is on the Adobe forum post you found.
