MacFreeze-up! :-(

This is a recurring but erratic problem. My Mac freezes. No menu or shortcut combination works. Safari is in front. Music in a hidden tab is playing. The current tab was booking a flight for me and a pop up info panel was displayed. Now cannot click on any input field. Menus dead. Mac seems totally dead. Cannot ALT Tab. But music still playing, so the OS is alive, but somehow frozen.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Step 1

For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.

If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Step 2

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

The graphics processor or the logic board is faulty and will have to be replaced.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Linc - Re: log extract - yes, I did figure that part out. But which lines did you consider relevant?

Etresoft - do you have any examples?

I have things like dropbox, google drive, f.lux, canon utility tool...

Also, regarding the hardware test. I restarted, held down D, and after the initial progress bar, I got an unfamiliar boxy-looking progress bar very briefly. No dialogue, and it disappeared. This seems odd. What should have happened?

tahm77 wrote:

Hello again tahm77,

I don't have any specific examples. Everyone has different software and different versions installed. Some of it is compatible and some of it isn't. In many cases people literally don't know what software they have installed because some of it only runs in the background.

Usually what I do in these cases is ask the user to run a little diagnostic program I wrote to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

EtreCheck will display basic information about your machine and a list of software that runs in the background that could potentially be interfering. It is possible that there will be something in your report that someone recognizes as problematic. Your report might also show nothing out of the ordinary. That information would also be valuable because it would show you haven't installed some "clean up" or scam-ware program. In that case, your only option may be to take the machine to the Apple store for more in-depth diagnostics.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

I cannot see, in Finder, location: /Users/[redacted]/Library/.............

But I can go there via Go menu - how do I turn off the setting that is hiding this folder?

This is why I was unable to find crash reports earlier. Finder search does not find anything in the hidden folders, e.g. DiagnosticReports.

There is a cloudd crash file dating to yesterday, and a dynamiclinkmanager crash file the day of my last "freeze". This latter one is for Adobe Elements 12, which I trashed recently.

Etrecheck killed processes?

It notes some agents (like divx) which I think I haven't used in a long time. I trashed Divx today (from Finder) but it looks like there's some additional housekeeping to do for the agents.

Also noted, the crash report. Will go look for that.

Hello again tahm77,

EtreCheck isn't killing any processes. Your operating system it killing parts of itself to make more memory available. You don't have enough RAM.

Unfortunately, it looks like you have been manually deleting things, and not the right ones either. If you ever install any software that asks for your password, you can never remove it without assistance. Except for software installed from the Mac App Store, the only way to remove software is by using a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never try to manually delete files. Never use an "app zapper". When 3rd party software asks for your password and you provide it, you are giving that software developer full control over your machine and all of your data. You may not make any further changes to your machine without asking them first. Otherwise, you will be at risk of various problems from slowness to lock-ups and data loss.

You have attempted manual software removals a number of times and that could be what is causing your problems. As difficult as it may be to properly uninstall software, it is far easier than trying to clean up partial uninstallations. You need to properly remove CleanMyMac and Adobe Elements Organizer. After doing that and adding more RAM, your machine should run better.

Don't worry about the crash report. If you had 50 of them, it might be worth looking at. If you need to access your crash reports, use Console.app. If a directory is hidden, it is hidden for a reason. Please don't make it visible. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
