Mail is corrupted and import won't work!

I am on a 2008 Mac Book Pro using 10.6.8 I had to force quit the computer when it totally stalled. Then I got a message that Mail was corrupted and I took steps to import, but still can't open Mail! It just spins! Help Please! I need my work email!
