Q: How do I convert a movie from cdr to mpeg to burn DVD?

Hi, This is the first time I've ever tried to burn a DVD.  I'm also new to my Mac.  I've been watching YouTube videos and downloaded the free "Burn" app, but it won't let me convert the cdr disk image so I can burn it to a DVD that will play on any DVD player.

So, where I'm at right now: I have a copy of the movie on my desktop in cdr format.  I was able to burn this to disk and it plays fine on my Mac, but won't play on my PC.

How do I convert the cdr copy of this movie to a format that will play on any DVD player?  I'm assuming that would be mpg format?  And then burn it to a new DVD disk?

What app will do this?  I'm not into creating videos.  I just want to be able to copy NTSC movies I own onto another DVD disk.  The simpler and cheaper the better. I'm overwhelmed with the options in the app store.

I've been Googling and YouTubing all morning, and I need help!  Thank you :-)

I use the free Handbrake video converter app.

    https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

Convert it to a format that yur PC can play.

This app can play most formats

Thanks, but when I looked at Handbrake online, it looked like it wants me to pick a device.  I want to burn a blank DVD.

Will Handbrake convert a cdr file?  I didn't see that listed as an option on their website.

So, to be clear, I'm trying to copy a DVD from a DVD to a blank DVD.  I don't want to watch it on any devices.  I just want to burn a copy of a DVD movie to a blank DVD.  I want it to be capable of playing on any DVD player.

    Thanks

How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2059

To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

Or, if you have Roxio Toast, just use the copy function.

'cdr' is a description of the media, not of the format of the files on it. Whether it will play on an external DVD player depends on the file format.

    Hi Klaus1,

Thanks for taking the time to respond, but I feel like I'm not explaining myself.

I have a DVD that I bought with a movie on it.  I did not previously burn it.

I used the Disk Utility to create an image file.  It ends with .cdr.

I used the Disk Utility to burn that image file to a DVD-R.

BUT, this DVD-R that I burned will only play on my Mac.

I want a copy of the original store-bought DVD movie, burned onto a blank DVD-R that will play on any DVD player in NTSC format.

So, how do I make that happen?

    Thanks.

This "I have a DVD that I bought with a movie on it" sure sounds like it is a commercial DVD. Those are usually copy protected and it against copyright law to break the copy protection

I own the movie.  I can make a copy of it.

I guess you don't know the answer regarding how to make a copy of a DVD to a DVD that will play on any DVD player.

    Does anyone else, please?

If if is a commercial DVD you do not own the move. You only have a licence to play the DVD. That licence included prohibiting copying it.

If it is a commercial DVD movie, making a copy would be a breach of copyright laws and cannot be discussed here.

If it isn't, your question has already been answered.

I disagree.  I can make a copy of a DVD that I own so it does not get destroyed.

Yeesh, are you all copyright lawyers now?

Talk to the law makers. We here are just citing the law as it now stands
