No, but it would be a good idea to keep it for a while until Photos becomes more stable. It also helps save a little space on the drive.

Photos is very different from iPhoto. Don't burn your bridges, until you are sure, that you do not want to be able to use both applications. Some tasks that are easy in iPhoto cannot be done in Photos at all, like adding or changing locations, batch changing titles and descriptions, sorting photos by filename, etc. You may want to be able to fall back on iPhoto occasionally.

And you will need iPhoto to be able to repeat the migration, should you discover photos or videos that did not migrate correctly.

In reading the articles about upgrading to Photos, I decided to keep both libraries. However, the library on my iMac is X'ed out. To my surprise, a backup copy of my old iPhoto Library on a Drobo is also X'ed out. I don't quite know  how is could happen but it did.

I did read about downloading an old version of the IPhoto Application from ILIFE (working on that) and I have a sales receipt for Leopard, IWork and Ilife Version "08", but I don't seem to remember a iPhoto Application. Is there such a piece of Software? Can someone provide a timeline or a version #.

It's the application that opens the Libraries. It should be in your Applications Folder. It may need updating:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
