This helped me. It took around 10-15 minutes before the Device showed up on the "Data Sources & Access" tab but it worked. Thanks. Apple should be ashamed that this issue is still happening. Now I'm waiting for my apps to re-download all data.

I turned off the Motion & Fitness option to save battery. When I needed it again, the device doesn't show on the "Data Sources & Access" tab. My steps weren't being tracked because of this. I tried all types of on the phone workarounds, which didn't help, until I saw this fix:

So here are the steps I followed:

  • Complete an unencrypted itunes backup
  • turn off find my iphone
  • under backups select "restore backup" ... not the "restore iphone" setting
  • restore from your latest unencrypted backup
  • turn off and on the setting to use the iphone as a health info source

Update: Reset phone and start as new phone (do not restore backups). I was able to get this to work and get the health app tracking again. I think there is something wrong with the motion chip and the actual health app.

Apple support worked through the issue with me (so props to you Apple Support).

Same problem here. New iPhone 6s Plus with 9.0.2: iPhone and/or Watch could not be added as source for motion tracking. Resultantly the "Activity" App on iPhone does not show any movement data. "Restore" as fresh phone did not solved the issue, so I went back to a my non-working backup. In iOS 9.1 Beta I didn't noticed the issue before.

Apple Care hotline mentioned an issue with iOS9.0.x and asked me to be patient and to wait for an update.

Having the same issue, did a full reset and started as a new phone as Apple customer service requested. This did not resolve the problem. Apple CS told me to return the phone that it may be a hardware issue. Verizon won't take the phone back because they say apps not working are not a warranty issue. Tried to explain that Apple told me to return it because of possible hardware issue. Verizon doesn't care as long as it makes phone calls. Apple please get this issue sorted.

Wow, that is a bit extreme as a solution. My health app will not work at all, it won't even let me input info. I too have an brand-new iPhone 6s Plus running 9.0.2, but the health app won't take either my apple watch or itself as a source. I reset and then restored the phone from a backup, re-pairing the watch with the phone each time, and nothing was resolved. The Apple support team asked me to make a video of the problem, which I will attempt to do tonight. I'm hoping that 9.1, which was released to Beta testers on Monday, will solve this issue.

dont know if this helps but i have the same issue..

I loaded up the Stepz app from the apple store on my 6s running ios 9.0.2 and i can see the historical data and today's step data.

this is def an issue with health app and not the hardware due to stepz being able to read my data as above.

im not factory resetting my iphone as there is too much data to reload so i guess its a waiting game for apple to fix the health app ?

"it just works"... yeah... right !
