I have since restored and synced my iPod with my desktop computer. I have not synced the iPod with my laptop in a while but the laptop had a very similar problem which I have fixed.

I should add that the virus has not done anything since I restored it but I do not know if it is still there.
Restore wipes out all the files from your device and restores everything to factory conditions. It's not there anymore.
The popup message on the iPod was a scam. Never, ever respond to such messages.
