Hey sisters 4,

I see that you have a question about updating the version of Safari you are using on your computer. I can also see that you are running Safari 5.0.6, which seems to be the final version of Safari that was available for use on 10.5.8. However, since you have shown that you have the 24” iMac, it seems like you could update your operating system if you so desired, which would give you the ability to update Safari as well. You can find the links to 10.6 Snow Leopard,10.7 Lion, and 10.8 Mountain Lion below:

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)

OS X Lion (10.7) - Apple Store (U.S.)

OS X Mountain Lion - Apple Store (U.S.)

Which operating system you choose will be based on the capabilities of your computer, and the minimum system requirements for each operating system can be found on those pages. Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

Braden...I've updated my operating system to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Now I want to further upgrade the operating system to the latest I can go. Is OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) the latest operating system I can use with my computer. I see that is the last one of the three you mentioned in your reply; I think there are others beyond 10.8. But maybe my hardware isn't capable of using those beyond 10.8. Is that right? Thank you for your reply.

Any Mac capable of running Mountain Lion should be able to run the current OS version, 10.10 "Yosemite."

You need to provide more info about your iMac sub-model before we can answer you question. Some 24-inch iMacs are constrained to using no higher OS than 10.7 Lion, and others can be upgraded all the way to 10.10 depending on the sub-model.

Please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu (lleft end of menubar) and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That will launch the built-in utility System Profiler. Its open page will look similar to this:

Note that I've indicated with a red arrow a code in the second line ("iMac11,3" in the example). That code will tell us your exact sub-model allowing us to make a proper recommendation. The operating system limitations by early iMac sub-models are shown in this chart:

That gives you an Idea why the code is important.

No more needed. What you supplied was perfect--you "done good."

From the chart you will see that your iMac will support OS10.10.4 (current OS) and, if the 4GB RAM you show in your profile is accurate, you should be good to go in the RAM department as long as you don't have very pro apps like video editing stuff. For word processing, e-mail, light photo editong, and general web browsing, 4GB RAM will do nicely.

The big caveat falls to what kinds of programs you currently use under OS 10.6. In that OS version, the system software would interpret older software written for pre-Intel Macs and let you use them on an Intel Mac. That capability goes away starting with OS 10.7. Most people who are affected are AppleWorks users and those running any version of Microsoft Office earlier than Office:Mac 2008.

You check for compatibility by software version with this handy web site:

http://roaringapps.com/apps?index=a

(that takes you to apps starting with the letter "A." For )

For example, The site shows that Adobe Illustrator CS2 is tested as compatilbe with OS 10.6 and 10.7 but has not been tested with higher versions:

You'll need to do this with the applications you use the most and, if one is not supported, will have to upgrade the app to a newer version or find a suitable replacement.

Know that you can always add questions to this thread as you progress through the decision process.

Allan

Thank you Allan...4GB ram is accurate. The main application I use is Microsoft Office 2008 (lots of spreadsheets and documents). I MUST have ichat (out of state kids). iphotos...a lot of photos. General web browsing. One application I use...Palm Desktop...on roaringaps shows not tested on OS X Yosemite. Same for Snow leopard (what I have) but it does work fine. Anyway, the applications I have/use appear to be pretty pedestrian. What scares me is when i read customer reviews and the issues some folks have with Yosemite https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=915041082&mt= 12&ls=1 I wonder if I should upgrade or not...given that all is working well now with Snow Leapord.

What is the latest version of Safari compatible with my computer. Currently have 5.0.6.
