Q: Is my computer slow or just old?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch Mid 2011 w/ 2.5 Gzh Intel Core i5 processor and 16 Gb 133 MHz DDR3 Ram with AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB graphics card. I run a second monitor next to my Mac.

This is computer is very slow especially when accessing the finder from within most Adobe applications. For example, using Adobe Muse, a pretty efficient web publishing program like Dreamweaver, I get the spinning beachball of death all the time when doing something like selecting a background image from a folder in the Finder.

Mac is fine except for accessing the finder inside an application. I've taken it to the Genius bar but I'm this performance is about right, though they aren't experienced at what I'm doing.

I've reformatted, safe booted, and got rid of excess junk. There is 60 GB memory free on my 500 GB main disc right now. I have two USB discs on the Mac as well, one for Time Machine, the other for movie and other large files.

Do I need a faster computer? This Mac doesn't feel like it's up to the job, though it seemed faster a few years ago before Creative Cloud came along. If I need a faster computer can somebody recommend something without a ridiculous cost.

Thanks for any help

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Please do an EtreCheck report and post the output here. You can download EtreCheck from http://etresoft.com/etrecheck.

Please don't post other kinds of diagnostic reports. They're very long and rarely helpful.

Your Mac Specs look fine, its sound more like an issue with your Hard Drive, if Finder is what is causing the issues.

Have you run any diagnostic tests on the HD?   It may be developing Bad sectors, or need a Defragmenting, though this is much rarer on Macs.

Here's the Entrecheck report. I've been getting rid of unused applications, which may explain the odd launch failure. Other than that, I have no idea how to read this thing. Interpretation appreciated.

We have the same iMac model/processor with only 8GB RAM runnign 10.10.3 and it is a very fast computer, so I doubt your computer is "too old."

Suggest you see if you can live without all the Blackberry (rim) software.

Your hard dive can use some cleanup:

    Son of Bert (disk0s2) / : 499.25 GB (57.80 GB free)

Not critical yet, but close at about 10 percent free space.

For a test, consider temporarily disabling KeyBoard Maestro and FontAgent Activator. If things speed up, that would be a clue.

I am concerned that Firefox is so CPU hungry. On my 2010 iMac i7 with 12 GB RAM, FF uses only about 15-25 percent of the CPU cycles when it is active and in the foreground. What happens if you disable the Picasso and Google Earth plug-ins and retest?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Thanks for that-- one of the messages I keep seeing is this:

2015-05-14 3:40:17.020 PM RimAlbumArtDaemon[776]: Failed to write artwork to folder, will try again directly from iTunes: /Users/stuG5/Library/Application Support/BlackBerryDesktop/MediaCache/AlbumArtCache/rodriguez/coming from reality (bonus track version)

I'm not sure if it's slowing anything down but the message is repeating constantly. I've removed the Blackberry Desktop Manager that I no longer need but of course the message is still repeating. In User/Library I found a folder called BlackberryDesktop which I removed but it keeps growing back!

Any way to get rid of it?

    Thanks

Any third-party software that doesn't install from the App Store or by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
