Photos won't print properly

Hello,

I've been having trouble printing my photos from the Photos app. When I try to print an image, everything seems well and good:

But when I continue:

User uploaded file

The item shows up as portrait, and the paper shows up as landscape. I tried printing it, and it did print exactly as shown in this preview. The same thing happens with landscape photos: they show up portrait in the print preview and the paper shows up landscape. It's the same problem for every size of paper, and the only way I have been able to get the whole photo to show up so far is to choose a large paper size to print a small image (because when it turns 90 degrees, it still fits on the paper).

I have tried:

- Rotating the images

- Changing anything I can from the dropdown menus on the print preview window ("layout," "paper handling," etc.)

- Going into Word and Preview to change print settings I can't from the Photos print menus (such as landscape/portrait)

- Reinstalling Photos, which required reinstalling OS X

I have also tried to print these from iPhoto, and the same problem occurs. I tried to make sure I had the latest version of iPhoto available, and to reinstall it if I did, but could no longer find it in the App Store. My mother does not have the same problem, even though we seem to have all of the same printing presets, and I have never had this problem with iPhoto before.

Thank you!

Open TextEdit, go to File > Page Setup..., change page orientation in the dialog box. Click OK. Test print in Photos.app or iPhoto.

This sounds like it could be a print driver compatibility issue. From OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download - Apple Support, it appears the driver software for the HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z has been recently updated to version 3.3.1. According to step 3 of this HP support page it may be necessary to remove and re-add the printer to the System Preferences printers list for the printer to use the updated driver.

This (illogical) use of TextEdit to change the default page orientation appears to be a result of the fact that 'Page Setup...' is not present in Photos, and the Print dialog does not present an orientation graphic, as does Preview. The same trick works if done in the 'Page Setup...' of Pages and other apps. Orientation is not displayed as a component of any printing presets in Photos, so will take it from the Default page attributes set in some other application. The same thing happens to me with a Canon MP970 printer driver. No change by deleting and re-adding the printer.
