Q: How do I access the camera on my imac from another location as a security device when I am not home

If you have a second Mac use Sharing. Apple provides a good explanation in:

OS X Mavericks: Screen sharing

If you don't have a second Mac then there are third party applications that do similar things.

In addition to the other ideas already provided, you could use another Mac and Apple Remote Desktop to control your iMac (and its camera).
