Q: New Apple ID

Hi! Well a quick question. When I create a new Apple ID do I have to really put a credit card? I mean can't I select none for payment method? I can't input a credit card even if I will not use that for purchases because I don't have one and my patents wouldn't agree even if I tell them after that I will remove it.
