Have a mac pro, 2009 with 2 GB ram. Installed yosemite and it runs very slow. Don't believe I can increase ram. Any suggestions to increase speed short of uninstalling yosemite?

Hi, here is apples spec for 2009 Mac Pro machines:

Memory

  • 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM
  • 8-core: Eight memory slots (four per processor) supporting up to 32GB of main memory using 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB DIMMs
  • Quad-core: Four memory slots supporting up to 16GB of main memory using 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB DIMMs

It would appear that the 2 variants have differing Max RAM limits however this proves that you should be able to upgrade your RAM without any problems upto at least 16GB in the Quad core variant, even higher with the 8 Core at 32GB.

Hope this helps.

The 16GB specs for the Quad core was issued before denser (than 4GB) modules became available. The upper limits are much higher now, but Apple has a history of not updating their specs based on the marketplace, only on what they are selling.

Be sure to deal with a Mac-centric Vendor who can tell you, with authority, what will work in your particular model Mac, or your money back.

A 2009 was sold with a MINIMUM of 3GB. Something is likely wrong, and while it may be able to "boot" with 2 or 3GB, that is about it.

Find some nice DDR3 ECC memory in a 4x4GB kit, and while at it, an SSD device.

You will not get anywhere near acceptable perfolrmance and will have lots of paging and sluggish.

Also installing 10.10 over a prior system often results in problems.

You do have a laptop. And even the 2011 model with 4GB many users complain Yosemite running slow.

More RAM along with replacing the disk drive for an SSD are in order.

Also, do a clean install (easy to look up how to do) instead of installing new OS's over the older one.

You could also download and run EtreCheck and post output to help focus on what is happening and wrong.

Could help with your other issues too.
