Disk errors that disk utility doesn't recognize, terrible hanging problem

I've got a mid-2011 Macbook Pro running Yosemite (10.10.3). A few weeks ago, I downloaded Photos, tried to import photos (RAW files) from a new shoot and everything went ***-up.

Background:

My computer's been a little slow for a while, but I figured it was because it's an old computer and I didn't have a lot of hard drive space. As I was trying to import the new photos (SD card, connected via Canon 60D), it froze. No SBBOD, and the mouse still moved, but it was otherwise entirely unresponsive. Force shut down worked, but it was slower than pitch from then on; trying to click in the Finder menu with nothing else running took upwards of three minutes to respond.

In the last two weeks, I have cleared ~120gb from my hard drive (I'm currently using 195gb, with 124 free), ran etrecheck multiple times, trawled backups, hidden files and caches accordingly, and run permissions and disk remedies more than I can count.

Here's the current problem: Every so often--almost always when I open Photos--my computer repeats the class-act freezing game. Finder freezes, too, and no keyboard shortcuts to force quit applications works. No SBBOD, and I can move windows, but I can't bring different windows to the front and I can't, according to the menu bar, switch applications.

Etrecheck reports 19(!!!!!) disk errors, but I have run verify disk on both the parent drive and the partition while logged in and in recovery mode multiple times, and it never reports any need to repair disk. I do anyway, but it doesn't help with the problem. I would just stop using Photos, but I need to export the files currently in the library, and I can't do that because of the freezing problem.

Any help would be much appreciated. I'm a photographer on the side and I would like to be able to get my clients their photos.

Also, what is the com.maintain.PurgeActiveMemory.plist launch agent, and why do I have spotify launch agents when I don't open it on launch?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I hate this error. I induced it, tried to work through it for 20 minutes and then gave up and forcibly shut down my computer. Ugh.

Anyway. Everything stopped at 8:18, but things started slowing down severely at 8:16, so I'm including an error that repeated about a dozen times.

(Note that lines 14 and 16 are commentary on the errors.)

I also tried to be very judicious about what I included. Let me know if there's something else I should search for.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

A hard drive isn't that expensive if you do it yourself - well under $100 for a drive of the same capacity for have now and the toolkit to open the computer. It is an easy replacement. Check out OWC for prices and while you are there look at their tech support page to see videos showing how to perform this repair.
