Cannot sign in to iCloud after Yosemite install

I am the original owner of an early 2008 Macbook Pro (4.1 A1260) which recently had a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.3 put on. When I try to login to my iCloud account I receive the following error message:

"You cannot sign into iCloud because there was a problem verifying the identity of this Mac. Try restarting your Mac and signing in again"

If I try to install an app via the Mac App Store I'm prompted to login to iCloud. When I try to I receive the following error message:

"Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."

Restarting does not help. Additionally, I cannot create a new Apple Id. Attempting to create a new Apple Id results in the following error message:

"You can't create an Apple ID at this time. Wait a moment and then try again."

I can login to my iCloud account via iTunes and on my iPhone and iPad. I just can't seem to get the Macbook Pro to login.

I made a Genius Bar appointment and the Apple guy hinted that I shouldn't actually be running Yosemite on this Macbook Pro (even though it appears that early 2008 Macbook Pros ARE supported). He suggested I bump back to 10.8 (Mountain Lion). FYI - I upgraded to 6GB ram and a 512GB SSD so there's no real issues running Yosemite.

Any ideas or at least explanations?

I discovered the source of my issue -- I have a dead ethernet port on my macbook pro. Apparently OSX uses a combination of hardware IDs to validate the computer against iCloud and the internal ethernet port is one of the devices. I'm not sure how it works if your macbook doesn't have an ethernet port (most new ones don't).

Ultimately I put Yosemite back on and decided I wasn't going to use any iCloud features for anything.

So... I've told you about contacting Apple Support 🙂 and I also did that.

Speaking to their specialists is a nice thing, especially when you're telling them stuff like deleting files and overriding configuration files and they understand you)

So far, what i can tell you and many others, who has the same issue.

1. Try to open your iTunes and sign in with your Apple ID. Then hit Store -> Authorize this Device. Right after that try to sign in to your iCloud (Settings -> iCloud) again.

If it still shows that "... cannot verify the identity of that macbook" or something like that, you should keep reading.

2. Boot up in Safe Mode and try to sign up with your Apple ID to iCloud. If you're still experiencing an issue, we're not done, yet.

3. After rebooting your MacOS device and logging into your account, create a new one. Make it an administrator and try to sign up there. If the mistake is still there, i have an answer – some files in the MacOS are not working properly. So, the only way – Reinstall MacOS on your Device,

To reinstall the latest MacOS:

1. Shutdown your MacOS Device

2. Boot in a Recovery Mode (hold "CMD" and "R" right after the Power Key)

3. Do not format your HDD or SDD because the process of reinstallation won't take any of your personal files, it will only reinstall all of the OS files and scripts.

4. Choose "Reinstall MacOS X on your Device"

5. Choose your startup drive as a destination for an installation

6. Have some rest (the reinstallation process will take about an hour and a half to do everything)

7. Sign in to your profile (if you have a password)

8. Open System Settings – iCloud and Sign In.

Congratulations! Now it should work 🙂

Hope this will help you) If there are some grammatical mistakes, sorry, English is not my first language))

Best regards!

I tried to do all of this and found it either made no difference or I couldn't re-intall OS X because I wasn't connected to iCloud (installer bails in Yosemite and El Capitan), so I randomly decided to try resetting the NVRAM via these instructions (Startup key combinations for Mac - Apple Support) and it cleared the problem.

Afterwards I was able to sign-in to iCloud with my usual Apple ID and could successfully update to El Capitan too.

This issue was resolved by your feedback katinel, great work and bigup!

Issue: "You cannot sign in to icloud because there was a problem verifying the identity of this mac. Try restarting your mac and signing in again."

Resolution: Pulling /Library/Preferences/System Configuration > then restarting the system = Resolves the issue (Heads up btw, toasting the sys config folder does toast time machine, making you having to rebackup time machine again so, heads up)

Keep up the great work <3

Don't over complicate this situation.

Before doing ANY of these things you need to "verify" the identity of your Mac. That, after all, is what the error message is stating.

This must be done from a mobile devise that also has access to your iCloud. Be sure to have WiFi access.

On your iPhone or iPad go to Settings > iCloud > Click your Name/User ID at the top > Enter password and log in > Devises > Answer the two questions then click Verify. Once there you will be able to see your devises. Click on your Mac and follow the prompts. This will cure your error message issue and give you full access to your iCloud from your Mac.

Good luck!

My iMac died and I used Target disk mode for a few weeks to run the system off an old macbook– that's when the problem started. Finally moved the 480GB OWC SSD from the iMac and installed into the busted up old mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13" (re: the main drive bus is bad so the HD goes in an OWC "data doubler" adaptor and runs off the optical bus... no primary HD is installed as, alas, that bus is really completely dead...). The ethernet port also won't hold a cable so I use an ancient HP USB 2.0 hub with integrated ethernet. It's a frankenstien! Heh!! Anyway, it was still no dice with iCloud until this post...

In any case - safe boot did not work to clear out the problem but while booted in safe mode I dumped those system config prefs, rebooted, and voilá, it works! iCloud is happy and I can run my couple of key App Store apps again. Yea! Knew I avoided App store and iCloud for a good reason...So hate to love Apple but I have the joy of managing a few Win 7, 8.1 and 10 boxes and that's it own world of cherry-cough-syrup-flavored-blah.

Thank you and cheers! -J.
