how close does apple watch have to be to the phone?

I'm trying to decide if this watch is something that will really enhance my life like all of my other Apple products. So far, I find myself using my phone nearly as much due to no texting keyboard and needing the phone to be close by for phone calls and such. I'm curious how close the phone has to be for my watch to pick up texts and calls?

For Bluetooth connections, the watch should be within around 10 metres/30 feet - it varies a bit depending on what other electrical devices are nearby, whether there's a wall in the way and so on.

If the phone is on a wifi network, then provided the watch is within range of the same network, they remain connected.

You can pick up messages over wifi only; for phone calls, you need to be within Bluetooth range

Hope that helps
