May 15, 2015 8:30 AM in response to Applethom250by bman6185,Short answer is no. Google updated their version that will require a newer OS. Are you on an original iPad? If so, your only option is to use the YouTube website.

May 15, 2015 8:48 AM in response to Applethom250by Phil0124,Actually the previous answers are not entirely accurate.
While the default pre-installed Youtube app no longer works, you can still download the Google Provided one for iOS 5.1.1, and it still works just fine. I have it on my first Gen iPad, and works without issue.
You'll need to download the current Youtube app to a computer running iTunes, and then from the Purchased Tab in the App Store App on the iPad download it to the iPad.
It will tell you its not compatible, but offer to download a compatible version instead.

May 15, 2015 9:03 AM in response to Phil0124by bman6185,I don't think that will work since the oldest version that the iTunes has is 1.21, which only supports iOS 6 and newer. Try it, if it doesn't work, then you can always use the website.

May 15, 2015 9:54 AM in response to Phil0124by Demo,Thanks for the correction Phil. From what I had read, I assumed that the app was no longer working in iOS 5.1.1. I sold my original iPad months ago. My apologies to Applethom250 for the bad information.

May 15, 2015 2:01 PM in response to Demoby Phil0124,No worries Demo, it happens to the best of us. As I said Apple's default Youtube App no longer works. However Google's own App does, at least it has so far for me.
Unfortunately there's nothing I can do with the original non functional Youtube App, and since iOS 5.1.1 does not support folders, its just sitting there uselessly on one of the screens.

May 15, 2015 11:53 PM in response to Phil0124by mclancey ,Thanks for this info. I'm going to aim to install an older google version of the YouTube app soon via a pc running iTunes then the purchased tab on app store app on iPad.
IN the meantime is there a way to disassociate the default action when clicking aYouTube link of my iPad trying to open it in the non functional Apple YouTube app?

May 16, 2015 12:08 AM in response to mclanceyby bobseufert,Try downloading another browser on your iPad 1. Google changed the way the current app works so if I try to open it in Safari it will default to the app. If I open it in another web broser I can use the website.

May 17, 2015 2:01 AM in response to bobseufertby mclancey ,Thanks. So it looks like I'll be ditching Safari as a result of this change Google made too. Any browser suggestions for 5.1? I just grabbed Dolphin, but have not tried it

May 17, 2015 2:22 AM in response to mclanceyby bobseufert,You're welcome. I've tried Dolphin and it appears very similar to the way Safari used to look. You can also try Bing. My favorite alternative browser is Puffin but unfortunately that requires IOS 6. There are many more in the App Store. Just because Google doesn't want you to use YouTube doesn't mean we can't figure out a way to make it possible.
