Q: New Photos app won't recognize/import GoPro files like iPhoto did

Why won't the new Photos app recognize jpg's and mp4 on a GoPro Hero3+ like iPhoto did.  I plug in the camera, and Photos (Yosemite 10.10.3) opens and shows thumbnails of both jpg and mp4 videos that look fine.  Click Import and the new iMac Retina chugs for a while and then generates the unrecognized file type or may not contain valid data message for all of them.  It recognizes them enough to line them up as thumbnails, and even label them as jpg's and videos, but it won't import them.  I think the problem is with the OS X update, because I downloaded GoPro Studio and tried to import them using that path, and even GoPro's own software can't import them off the camera.  IPhoto, before the OS X upgrade and switch over to Photos always worked fine.  Nothing has changed except the elimination of iPhoto in favor of Photos.

Also, believe there should be a category in the Photos discussion for Import.  This really isn't an organizing or editing question.

    Hi all,

I was having the same problem today.

    This worked for me :)

I popped my mini sd card out of the GoPro and into the mini SD usb card reader.

Photos imported the videos without a hitch.

Reported this issue to Apple (Canon Vixia HR50 HD camcorder).   Went through some troubleshooting steps and a few days later they instructed me to download the newest version of Mac OS 10.10.4.  This update includes a Photos update and I'm happy to report issue is solved.  Successful import of my photos and vids into Photos app.

Did not work for me...now cannot get my Mac Mini with OS10.10. to recognize Sony A6000 or GoPro Hero2 in Photos/  No problem with direct import into iPhoto.  It made no difference turning Sony on first...ditto with Go Pro.  I had to resort to a Card Reader.  Also Image Capture did not recognize the cameras.  A friend using Final Cut Pro could easily import from the Go Pro so there is nothing wrong with my cards/  This anomaly began with Photos

So how lame is this...Apple needs to fix this.  Popping cards in and out of card readers is more likely to scratch them then doing a direct import from camera which worked fine until we were switched to Photos

It's more likely that the mini USB port in the camera or the connector will be worn out or compromised than a memory card to be. Memory cards are built for such handling and and be replaced easier than a messed up port or cable.

Well several users have reported that this is fixed in Photo 1.0.1 - since you do not disclose what versions of software you are using no one can help you - in the future to get help try posting more facts and less opinions and RANTs

    I'm having the same problem.

Plug my GoPro3+ into my Mac, Photos detects the files, but will NOT import them. I receive the following error:

Unreadable Files: 2, the following files could not be imported (there may be an unrecognized filed type or the files may not contain valid data).

All of my software is up to date and I'm simply trying to upload one video and one photo. That's it.

    Help?

I am having the same problem with multiple devices, but Image Capture is working for me with one exception which I will describe at the end.

My symptoms are: sometimes iPhone 6+ photos are not recognized as 'new' in the import window, so there is apparently nothing to import, even when there are dozens/hundreds of new photos.  If new photos are recognized and i try to import 'all new', the app will hang after a few minutes and no photos will import.  No other solution than a force quit for Photos.

If I try to import a selection of the new photos (if they have appeared) then it sometimes will work and so I sit there importing 50 or 100 at a time until they are all in.  Just cannot import the entire set.  Same thing happens with my GoPro Hero 3, an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 5.

My workaround has been to use Image Capture to import to the hd and then I drag into Photos. It defeats the purpose.  My issue with image capture is that my phone photos have reached 9,999 and now have looped all the way back to IMG_0001, so on image capture, which lists photos by number, I am having to import all images/videos within a number range, which includes photos from a year or more ago and then delete by date before I drag/drop into Photos app.

Running OS X 10.10.4 on an iMac Retina 5K late 2014 and Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)

    iPhone 6+ with iOS8.3

Would like to hear of a solution.

useless just trying to import my pics and video, my GoPro Studio doesn't even open the importer, my Photos briefly sees the pics on my GroPro Hero 3+ and then all the thumbs disappear  (it only shows the camera connected, and nowhere else).  No improvement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

latest of everything, 10.10.5 and the latest GoPro Studio 2.5.6.75 and latest Hero 3+ firmware 3.0.  the funny thing is that i didn't have any problems before the 10.10.5 update.
