Q: New Photos app won't recognize/import GoPro files like iPhoto did

Why won't the new Photos app recognize jpg's and mp4 on a GoPro Hero3+ like iPhoto did.  I plug in the camera, and Photos (Yosemite 10.10.3) opens and shows thumbnails of both jpg and mp4 videos that look fine.  Click Import and the new iMac Retina chugs for a while and then generates the unrecognized file type or may not contain valid data message for all of them.  It recognizes them enough to line them up as thumbnails, and even label them as jpg's and videos, but it won't import them.  I think the problem is with the OS X update, because I downloaded GoPro Studio and tried to import them using that path, and even GoPro's own software can't import them off the camera.  IPhoto, before the OS X upgrade and switch over to Photos always worked fine.  Nothing has changed except the elimination of iPhoto in favor of Photos.

Also, believe there should be a category in the Photos discussion for Import.  This really isn't an organizing or editing question.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Photos 1.0.1, Yosemite 10.10.5 and I can not see any image device (camera, Go Pro) when it is plugged in.  I tried some of the suggestions here but so far nothing,  After iPhoto database suddenly lost a large chunk of my images (only have thumbnails briefly), I don't want to rely on these. Actually, I can not, as Photos and Image Capture does not recognize the Go Pro!

    What else can be done?

Thank You!! I still can't see the GoPro as a disk, but it at least lets me select where to download images and what to do with the camera afterwards. Thanks!!!

This is the only way I can import from my GoPro Hero4 Silver:

    1) Take the memory card out of the camera.

    2) Insert the card into the supplied adaptor.

    3) Use the memory card slot on my MacBook Pro Retina.

The GoPro Studio launches and everything works as it should.  This is a pain. I'd much rather just plug the camera in to the USB slot.

Using a 2012 model iMac did not work either.

I have had success using an older (2011) MacBook Pro.

    I hope this helps somebody.

I have noticed as well that in the 10.10.3/Photos setup, the computer does not seem to mount the camera as a disk/diskimage in the finder window or in Photos the way that iPhoto always does/did.

First off you should upgrade to El Captain and Photo 1.3 - it has many new features and bug fixes adn is reported to handle GoPro much better

Photos 1.0.1 does not work on my Mac Pro Yosemite 10.10. I add MP4s or AVIs from an internal HDD.

Get up to date - OS X is up to OS X 10.11.3 and Photos up to 1.3 - just keeping up to date solves many problems - you are a year and a half out of date

I have the latest OS and version of Photos.  I have the same issue. Pops up briefly in Photos and then disappears.

Very helpful information regarding the power on / power off difference when importing direct from GoPro to Photos. Thank you.

This worked for me too.  Thank you.  It's really odd because yesterday I was able to import directly from the Hero4.  Same camera.  Same cable.  Same card.  Today, error messages, but using the mini SD usb card reader worked. A few weeks ago, I tried to import using the card reader and it didn't work.
