Macbook Pro is very slow when booting

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot or why my Macbook Pro is very slow when booting up is much appreciated. I don't remember it being this slow when booting.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Do you have a conventional hard drive or a solid state drive?

How many items are in your user Log-in Items (go to System Preferences > Users and Groups >[your account] > Login items tab)? Remove any you don't really need.

Have you recently added RAM? The more RAM you have, the longer the Power-on Self Test ("POST") requires to validate the RAM.

Are you running any third-party anti-virus programs or so-called "cleaning/optimization/tune-up" apps? They are known performance killers, totally unneeded, and are often scamware foist upon people switching from Windows who have been battered into believing that you can't use the computer without steaming piles of third-party utilities.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.

1. Set the default startup disk.

2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them

3. Reset the System Management Controller.

4. Reset the PRAM. Afterwards you'll need to repeat Step 1.

5. Reset the printing system.
