Q: Dual Core Stuck at Grey Screen...tried everything

I had a topic open where i was trying to fix a non-working iTunes app.

 

I was on 10.6.8

 

I had accidentally deleted CarbonCore files so I decided to erase the drive and reinstall my OS (Mavericks).

 

At this point, the Grey Screen appears at startup and won't get past that screen.

 

When I startup, I have to hold OPTION in order to select which startup drive to use.

 

I have tried:

 

1. disconnecting all peripherals

2. Safe Boot

3. Resetting NVRAM and PRAM

4. Cursing

 

Any other thoughts?  This computer is pretty much useless at the moment and its a great Mac Pro

    I have also tried TARGET DISK MODE.

     

    Running Disk Utilities, there is nothing wrong with the hard drive.  It seems to be some sort of hardware issue?

    How did you try target disk mode?

    How did you run disk utility?

    What model Mac Pro?

    What video card?

    I started up the Mac Pro in TARGET DISK MODE

     

    Connected to my MacBook Pro.  Opened Disk Utilities on my MacBook Pro and ran Repair Disk.

     

    The Mac Pro is an Intel Dual Core.

     

    Video Card is...NVIDIA QUADRO.

    Also, I can't perform a SAFE BOOT because when hold down SHIFT, the computer doesn't know where the STARTUP disk is.

     

    And...there is no APPLE LOGO at startup.  Its just a GREY SCREEN.

    Do you have a 2006 Mac Pro (1.1) with a Nvidia Quadra FX 4500?

    When you boot the Mac Pro in Target Disk Mode what shows on the screen?

    What happens when you boot from an install disk?

     

    I suspect a bad video card

    I honestly forget the peripherals on this Mac Pro. 2006 sounds about right.

     

    yes, its a QUADRO FX 4500.

     

    When I boot in Target Disk Mode, the FireWire logo comes up on the Mac Pro and the Hard Drive will boot onto the MacBook Pro I'm mounting the Mac Pro onto.

     

    I have not tried booting from an install DVD.  I have tried booting from a USB drive when i tried to install a new OS but it would not get past the Grey Screen.

     

    I have to install the OS onto the new Hard Drive using another computer in the office.

    How was the USB disk you tried to boot from made?

    What OSX version?

    It's a USB drive that I restored and put Mavericks on.

     

    Its a safety OS install drive that I keep at my office that I've used many times to install OS on my various computers.

     

    We have about 6 macs here.

     

     

    Also, is it just coincidence that immediately the moment i start fudging around with software and trying to install the 10.6.8 combo update while trying to fix a faulty iTunes, that ALL OF THE SUDDEN the video just decides to crap out on me? i had ZERO issues with this Mac Pro before I started messing with software.

     

    Is there a video card hardware test somewhere?

    The 2006/2007 Mac Pro does not support beyond Lion without hacks and a newer video card

    When you have a clean or functional system or before installing or making changes (Inc. Apple software and OS X updates): CLONE the system.

     

    Get out a retail 10.6.3 DVD at this point. Then clone the system at 10.6.8 before going further.

    I'm not too worried about backup...as this was just a secondary work computer and I have all the APPS to reinstall.

     

    I have the original drive with 10.6.8 on it that I'll try now to boot from....but it wouldn't boot before from it.

     

    I was unaware that 2006 Mac Pro's couldn't use anything past Lion.

     

    I have Mountain Lion and/or Lion install drive somewhere and will try to boot from that.

    I have put the drive with 10.6.8 on it back into the Mac Pro and started up holding OPTION.

     

    Selected the boot drive.

     

    And it at least went to the Apple Logo but now is stuck there with the revolving "thinking" circle under it (NOT the colored pinwheel...and no mouse pointer).

     

    Its stuck there.

    Have you successfully repaired that HD via Disk Utility (Target disk mode for other Mac)?

    Did this disk work before in this Mac?

    Do you have an install DVD for the Mac Pro?

    as stated before...yes...

    And, yes, this drive was working perfectly fine before. I have tried booting from a USB drive as well...still stuck at Apple Logo.

     

    I booted in SAFE MODE and the progress bar will run, then when its done, the Apple Logo and spinning circle will stay till I manually power down.
