3rd Gen ORIGINAL iPod - Can it be rescued?

I have an ORIGINAL iPod 3rd gen that doesn't like to be mounted to ANYTHING anymore.

Can I flash the firmware to update it?

Is there anything I can do to make this playable? I'd like to load up a bunch of audio books on it and just leave it plugged into my car.

Thanks

I have tried the original cable and newer cables as well and with little success getting it to show up on my new iMac. When I try to connect it to the car, the cord isn't supplying power so it dies right away. (I could replace the battery, but the point was to have a MP3 player that I can leave in the car.)

This is a photo of what I have:
