Q: MacBook Shuts Down Suddenly or Completely Freezes

My MacBook Pro has suddently shut down at least a couple times. When booting back up, it then seems to work fine.

One evening, it also froze. The mouse pointer could move around, but clicking on anything did nothing. Holding down power button did nothing. AppleCare had me try a few things with no success. Eventually, he asked me to hold down the power button again. This time it shut down and came back up working OK.

Diagnostics has shown no problem. What else can I check? How long does Apple let this continue before they do someting, like replacing my MacBook Pro?

Check to see if you have a kernel panic report.  If so post it:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    That might provide a clue.

    Ciao.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Thank you for your response. However, it's a couple months old now.

If it's working now, just use it. If it keeps freezing, you have 90 days of free phone support, and a one-year warranty.

    Hello,

In the DiagnosticReports folder there are 13 .crash files. 11 begin with accountsd and 2 begin with familycircled. I don't see anything about kernel panic.

    Thanks.

I also purchased 3 years of AppleCare, so my concern is not support. Despite buying 3 MacBook Pro's for my three daughters, this is my first Apple Computer. My concern is, if these shut downs continue, the cause is not clear (e.g., no kernel panic report) and I am always able to recover, will Apple do something about it. Or, will they continue to say, "it's working now."

I have this same problem too.  My Macbook is about a year old.  This suddenly started happening two nights ago and it's happened every night since.  Holding down the power button shuts the machine down and after a reboot, everything is fine.  I've gone through all the logs and have no clue why this is happening - I'm a former systems administrator (Unix) and have at least a clue what to look for... but I've seen nothing that pops out at me as being relevant.  And there are no kernel panics/crashes to be found.

There's no indication in any of the logs I've looked at of a hardware OR a software problem... but there's got to be something.  The only software that was updated/changed just before this started happening was Adobe FlashPlayer.  But, I can't imagine why that should cause this problem.

Hopefully someone at Apple is reading this forum and can provide a clue or even better - a solution.

    Hi sauljaffe,

My issues started when the device was only a few month old. They say misery loves company. This is my first Apple computer ever. I switched because I was tired of Windows doing stupid things like this, and everyone accepted it because it was "Windows". I do not find it acceptable that my mac is doing this! The other postings on this thread have not lead to any solution of the problem. Have you worked with Apple Support at all.

The one positive thing is that the problem has not occurred again in at least the last few weeks. I'm now keeping my fingers crossed. (However, as I work in medical electronics/software/networks, I would still prefer to know what the source of that problem was, even if it never re-occurs.)

It's happening to me once a week now.  No, I have not spoken with Apple Support.  They've been unable to help me in the past with problems so I have no belief that they'd be able to help with this either.

Confusing posts. This no longer happens. Moving to solved, although I don't have a clue what is fixed.

Excuse me but, IT IS NOT SOLVED.  I still have the problem (had it last night) and others are still having this problem too.

Excuse me, but that's not how it works.  If you don't want to follow the thread any more, then unsubscribe.  But, don't say that a problem is resolved when it isn't.  Apple (and most companies) want one thread per problem so that they can follow reports, descriptions, etc. in order to find a common denominator and hopefully a solution.   Other people are having the exact same problem as you reported, and it is therefore appropriate to have all of that information contained in one thread.

If you don't like it, and don't want to follow it, then unsubscribe from the thread.
