Adding caption for a title to "Photos" shows caption in the middle of the photo - can it be moved to to bottom/top?

In adding a caption (by using the "i" to add information) to a photo in "photos", the caption appears directly in the middle of the photo instead of at the bottom (which would be preferable) or even the top. I've tried to move/drag the caption but no joy. Is there a way to move that caption or have it appear in a more appropriate place? thanks for any help.

Where are you clicking to add a caption to a photo?

Captions are not shown on the photos at all, only the faces names. Are you clicking the "+" button in the Info panel? That will add a faces name and not a caption.

  • To add a title to the photo, that will be shown below the thumbnail click the top most line of the Info panel and add a title.
  • To add an additional description click the text field below the box with the camera data and enter a description.

To hide the faces names, that are showing directly on the photo use the View menu. View > Hide faces.

Oh, I do see the faces on the photos. The caption (added as you suggested) is not at the bottom of the photo, but sort of a title way to the top of the photo area. Is that the way its supposed to be? I thought it would add a caption right underneath the photo - at least that's what I wanted it to do, now where will this caption show up - will I have to open the photo each time to see it? It doesn't show in the album itself unless i click on that photo? Is this the only way it will always show?

I am confused by where this text is being displayed. In your first post you said it appeared directly in the middle of the photo but now you are saying it (or something else?) is being displayed at or near the top of the photo area.

Note that in the full sized, single photo view, the window will be titled with the title of the photo if it has one, otherwise with the date & time the photo was taken or added, along with location info if that is included in the photo. Descriptions are shown only in the Info window. Photo titles will be shown below the thumbnails in multi-item album views, but only if the item has a title & Views > Metadata > Titles is checked.

sorry if in my confusion, I've also confused you. <lol>

It is the "faces" names that I am seeing written across the photos. Yes, the "window" is titled with the title of the photo. I wanted that title underneath the actual photo itself. Seems that doesn't happen. :-(

Oh, just went to views - checked metadata and titles. Now I see my captions in the multi-item album views.

Related question: Just wondering if there is a way to export the photos WITH the captions....I think not, according to other posts here.....????

thanks so much, appreciate the help.

To avoid any more confusion than is necessary, note that what you see under the thumbnails are titles, not captions. Captions are part of the IPTC metadata standard & essentially the same thing as descriptions. All of these things are embedded in the photos themselves & if present in the originals will be exported automatically with the Photos File > Export > Export Unmodified Original option. Otherwise, they will be exported when you use the regular export option and the boxes shown below in the export dialog box are both checked and not greyed out:

All this can be quite confusing, but it isn't all Apple's fault. The photo metadata standards have evolved over several decades to address the changing needs of both amateur & professional photographers, & as a result they are substantially more complex than Apple's simplified interface suggests.
