Recently I noticed that I cannot import from an SD card directly into Photos app. When I try, the contents of the SD card are greyed out (as shown). In order to import, I have to copy the files to my Mac and import from there. Any insights are appreciated.
The reason is simple but frustrating for me. Import and image storage functionality in Photos is frustrating for me at all.
Once you uncheck Copy items to Photos Library you can not import images from SD/CF or other card. Or you can but only by drag and drop from Finder window and in this case Photos does not respect that images have not to be imported to library.
I hate that Photos behavior. You have to conduct two independent steps to get images to Photos without being screwed into library. First import them to mac and them to Photos. I will probably return to Canon app that is far from good but let me be the one who manage photos by my sake.

Try Image Capture (in your applications folder)

Yes, that did it, thanks. Image Capture has the Photos app as one of the destination choices.

Once the photos are safely on your Mac and backed up use the camera's format command to erase and reformat the card - that probably will help going forward

That is one of many, many reasons that unchecking the copy imported items to the Photos library is strongly not recommended
