LAN IP address starting with 169.

My Airport Extreme is issuing IP addresses that start with 169.254.255.x and my Apple TV will not connect to the internet. This all started when Time Warner replaced my cable modem with a Arris modem. The modem had to be reset by TW as to a bridge for the airport to work. All of my wireless and ethernet devices have a IP address starting with 169. All of my other devices work except the Apple TV.

Airport Extreme 802.11ac, version 7.7.3

Can't say I've seen that before! The DHCP range on the Network screen should match the one on the Network Options screen (10.0.255.*). Possibly someone else has seen this before.

Some ideas:

- Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN port of the Airport Extreme.

- Try powering down (unplug) the Airport Extreme and then bring it up again.

- If that doesn't work, power both the Airport Extreme and the modem down, then back up again.

255 is highly unusual. 10.0.255.x for IP range..

As with jjkraw I have never seen that IP used.

Please do a factory reset.

Factory reset universal

Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

Redo the setup again using the airport utility.

Do not change the IP range from default which is 10.0.1.x as the airports seem to have some things hard coded in them and so sticking to defaults helps keep them on the straight and narrow.

I also recommend using short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. same with passwords on a bit longer.

Particularly yosemite is very sensitive to DNS issues and long names don't help.

Once finished reboot the whole network as all the IP addresses will need to change and you must search again for the new wireless name. This should get it going.

Since the IPv4 DHCP Range had a pull down I selected the 192.168 that was in the pull down and did an update.

Would be better if you heeded LaPasteangue's advice to use the default of 10.0.1.2 through 10.0.1.200. The Apple TV will be happier seeing an Apple default address. Get that working first, then you can try using 192.168.x.x if you want.

Click the Internet tab at the top of the AirPort Utility window

Click Internet Options near the bottom

Make sure that the setting for Configure IPv6 is set to Link Local Only.

Tossing in a few thoughts waiting for jkbitz to reply further.

The 169.254/24 IP space (referred to as "link local") is meant for isolated islands, like an ad-hoc network, where there is no Internet connectivity. I can't figure out why the Express would use that range within its DHCP server. One reason I asked about the Wireless tab was to make sure that it is set to Create a network rather than to extend one (just looking for any configuration weirdness that might cause the problem).

I fully agree that if nothing seems to work to do the factory reset and use the defaults - get it working first. FWIW, my home network uses the 192.168.1/24 subnet and my three ATVs are fine with that.

As someone old enough to remember the "classful" IP address days, I'm always fearful of anything with a "255" in it. 😮
